Youth Sailing Trips

Sailing is Fun for All Ages!

icon

Explore the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore while learning about sailing during curated group activities.

Designed specifically with our many youth group customers in mind, we have developed a Junior Sailing Program.  This serves as a perfect compliment to the Sailing Merit Badge program for Scouts or camp sailing programs. The Junior Sailing Program is a unique combination of sailing skills, wilderness adventure, nature education and stewardship.

Interested in Booking a Youth Sailing Trip?   Here’s all the details!

Who: Youth aged 11 – 18 – Boats will be skippered by a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain and crew will limited to six on each boat, divided between youth and youth organization chaperones

Where: Sailing charters depart from Port Superior Marina, just 2 miles south of Bayfield, WI. Trip will be spent sailing and anchoring in and around the Apostle Islands. The group of 22 islands provides a varied landscape which can be explored via sailboat, dinghy and by foot.

Accommodations:  Our fleet of late model sailboats offer our guests premium accommodations. Our wide variety of boats also means that we can meet your needs regarding crew size and budget. While out sailing, the captain will be allotted their own private cabin onboard, with the crew and chaperone sharing the balance of the sleeping quarters. Guests should bring their own bedding and towels. Each boat has at least one private head.

Provisions:  Plan to bring your own food and beverage, and please include the captain in your meal plans. The galley will be equipped with pots, pans, utensils and dishes. You can prepare your meals on the stove, in the oven or on the grill. There will be a fridge or icebox on board your boat, so you’ll have safe storage for perishables. Guests typically bring water with them for drinking as well. We can talk through provision suggestions and meal plan ideas.

Schedule:  Trips vary in length from a minimum of 2 days to as many as 7 days (our suggestion is 3-4 days!)  Crew arrives at the marina in the afternoon, just in time to meet the Captain and get situated on the boat before you spend the night on the boat in the marina, this is considered our complimentary sleep aboard. The adventure begins the next morning, when you set sail for the islands (that is, after a safety talk and introduction to the boat). Each night will be spent at anchor in the islands, with eating, living and sleeping on board with the Captain. The trip concludes on the last day, with crew off-boarding by 4:00 pm.

Sailing Skills:  All crewmembers, (chaperones included!) will learn all the skills included with our Junior Sailing Program. That means you should start practicing your knots and points of sail now! We’ll help you with some pre-trip studying to get you to learn the basics of sailing before you even arrive.

Wilderness Adventure:  All of our boats will come with a rowable dinghy, so the crew can use it to explore the islands where you will anchor for the night. This trip involves sailing into a true wilderness, that means cell phone reception will be limited or non-existent. Sail, hike, explore and learn about the world in the islands. At the end of a long day, there’s also time to relax, so bring cards, games or books to enjoy.

Nature Education:  Crew can embrace the wilderness around them by learning about wildlife that call the islands their home. Be on the lookout for a variety of birds, amphibians, fish and mammals while exploring the islands and the lake. Also learn about the geology of the area, which can be easily observed from sailboat or dinghy. Check out the National Park Service site for their Junior Ranger program.

Stewardship:  Working directly with the Friends of the Apostle Islands, our trips include a stewardship project that helps align with the Friends’ goal of helping to preserve the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Cost:  The pricing for this trip ranges from $550 – $800/person.
